Pianists of all ages and abilities will perform on pianos stationed at six venues around the city: Washington Park MAX Station, Portland City Hall, OHSU, Legacy Emanuel Hospital, OMSI, and Peace Health Southwest Medical Center. This year there will be more than 20 Piano Day events held around the globe. The date chosen is the 88th day of the year in homage to the 88 keys on a standard piano.
Piano Day began three years ago as an international celebration of the instrument through public performance. Last year, Quackenbush joined Pink Martini founder Thomas Lauderdale, a Jazz Society of Oregon Hall of Famer, and a 9 year old pianist on stage. This year’s field of talent includes TriMet Operations Analyst JB Burho, Portland Police Sergeant Jim Quackenbush, and a 7-year-old pianist who’ll play the entire hour from 2:00 p.m.
MAX riders are encouraged to pause and enjoy the performances, which also will be streamed live online and watched around the globe. Musicians at Washington Park MAX Station will be on stage from 12:00 p.m. “ The piano keys are black and white but they sound like a million colors in your mind.” TriMet’s Washington Park MAX Station is one of six sites around the metro area where pianists will be tickling the ivories as part of the annual fundraiser that spreads awareness and raises money for programs that further piano performance and teaching in Oregon. Local artists will join pianists around the world as they pay homage to the piano. Music will fill the air on March 29, 2018, including at TriMet’s recently renovated Washington Park MAX Station, when Portland Piano International celebrates Piano Day.

The voicing process focuses on the hammers of the piano - shaping, softening, hardening, and fitting them to the strings with the goal of evening the tone of the piano. This ensures that the piano is efficiently translating the energy from your fingers into tone from the strings. The regulation process includes dozens of adjustments that can be made to each key in a grand piano. Besides tuning, pianos periodically need to be regulated and voiced to maintain their ideal feel and tone. I can also make recommendations for more thorough work if the piano needs it. Small adjustments, repairs, and light voicing may also be included as required. My regular piano service includes a tuning and pitch correction, pedal adjustment, and an inspection of the action. I understand how important it is to have an instrument that is responsive to your musical personality, and look forward to working with you to make your piano its best. I have studied classical and jazz piano, and have performed as a soloist and in group settings. Most importantly, I love to play my piano. To help with that, I am always happy to answer questions - or serve as a tour guide - and help everyone take steps to make sure their piano stays in top condition. In addition to conscientious care from a skilled piano technician, it is also helpful when the piano owner knows more about their instrument. I have spent thousands of hours tuning and servicing pianos in homes, and in the rebuilding and restoration processes.Īs a pianist and music aficionado, it is a joy to work with piano owners to help them get the most out of their instrument.
